Abstract
Hadith (Prophetic Tradition) holds great importance in deducing and understanding rulings and is considered the second source of Islamic legislation after the Holy Quran. Hadith includes the sayings, actions, and reports of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his progeny) and the pure Imams (peace be upon them) according to the Imami Shia, and of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his progeny) and the companions according to the Sunni sects of Islam . Hadith has been divided into several categories, each with various terms. Some of these may overlap and resemble each other, hence they should be addressed and an attempt be made to differentiate and understand them clearly.
The research includes defining the defective hadith and understanding its meaning linguistically and terminologically. It also addresses the meaning of defective hadith according to the Imami Shia and its meaning among the Sunni sects of Islam. The research explores the categories of Defective hadith and attempts to reach its common elements among the schools of thought. Additionally, the research discusses defective hadiths, whether the defect is in the chain of transmission or in the content.
